Song 14 - The Hands That Built America

Posted by Jackie

The Hands That Built America is a song released by U2 in 2002. It is about how so many people from so many different places were what created and nurtured America. My favorite aspect of this song is that U2 doesn’t talk about America as made up of Americans and Americans only. The song recognizes that the diversity of America is what makes America, America. I love how between lines of the chorus, multiple ethnicities are listed because it was all of these people who joined together on one land and made a grand community. It may have been rocky but it eventually fell together and created what is now the world super power. Another quality that makes this song so good is the adjectives used to paint the picture of “America”. Steel and glass canyons, stony fields, freckled hills, watercolour sky. These all inspire images in your head. Not to mention the idea of thousand and thousands of hands coming together and building our home from ground up.
